"This story was the most realistic and most memorable I have ever read. I have been looking for Chrono Trigger for over 4 years now and have had no luck. Your story felt as though I was actually playing the game. There were points in the story where I just yelled out 'oh yea, I remember that!'. It was so realistic, at some points I actually cried. As said before, this is a wonderful story, and should be published for all to read."

Prologue
1999 A.D. - The Day of Lavos
"What the hell is going on around here??" yelled the commander, walking swiftly into the room.
"Sir!" one of the scientists stood up, "We don't know what it is sir, there's been a series of earthquakes, each stronger than the last..."
"I know there are earthquakes!!" the commander cut him off, "Would somebody tell me something I don't know??"
"Truce is under attack!!" another scientist suddenly yelled. Everyone in the room fell silent as their eyes shifted to the large computer monitor at the front of the room. They watched in horror as a crater the size of a city opened up next to Truce. A huge creature emerged from the crater, sending several large rocks flying into the air. These rocks fell back to the ground, destroying not only Truce, but several other cities as well.
The building gave a sudden shudder.
"We're hit!" someone yelled. The commander was already beyond caring.
"Everyone get underground!!" someone else shouted, running for the airlocks which led into an underground storage room. Several of the scientists followed, fleeing in panic. The commander stood in the middle of the room, silent. The screen flickered suddenly, the picture went out.
"Sir? Are you coming?" asked a scientist who had turned back for the commander.
"Lavos...." the commander said. Before the scientist could respond, the ceiling caved in, and the entire weight of the building crashed down upon them both.
It was the day of Lavos. The end of life on the planet as we know it. After the initial attack, Lavos continued to eat away at the planet from within, slowly killing off all life. It was, essentially, the end of the world.
But... what if the future could be changed?

The following are some excerpts from the story. They are specifically picked so that they will not give away important plot elements.
Crono (Chapter 3)
Crono's train of thought was interrupted by a noise in a nearby bush. He immediately unsheathed his sword. A rabbit scurried out from it and ran away. Crono laughed to himself. He sheathed his sword.
"What?" he said to an imaginary monster, "You think you scare me? En guarde!!" he yelled and unsheathed his sword. Cool, Crono thought to himself. He admired his new sword. Sheathing it again, he continued to walk toward the castle and the forest which surrounded it.
"I'm sorry to disappoint all you beasts out there," Crono announced to the forest ahead of him, "But I have a new sword! Hah!!" he yelled and unsheathed his sword again.
"Graaaaaahhhhhh!!!" screeched a small creature as it jumped out of the forest. Startled, Crono stumbled backward and fell. Screeching, the creature jumped onto him, ripping into his chest with small claws. Swearing under his breath, Crono slammed the hilt of his sword into the creature's face, knocking it into the air. Crono managed to stand up, and raised his sword. The creature was already back on its feet, and, after little hesitation, ran back toward Crono. The next instant, the creature jumped toward Crono. While it was in midair, Crono sidestepped to the right, extending his blade to his left. The creature, helpless, flew straight into the sword, splitting in two with an ear-splitting shriek. Droplets of blood from the creature landed on the heavily breathing Crono.
Crono, Marle, and Lucca (Chapter 5)
Suddenly, Crono gasped.
"Up there!!" he yelled and pointed toward the ceiling. A huge, metal structure was being lowered into the room. By the time Crono could see clearly what it was, it had been lowered onto the ground in front of them. It was at least five times Crono's height, and seemed to have a large eye engraved in the front of it. Two doors in its sides opened, and two smaller mechanical objects emerged from them. They floated in the air on either side of the main object. A voice suddenly came from within the mechanism.
"This is Guardian," said the robotic voice, "What are you here for?" Crono stepped forward hesitantly.
"People are starving up above," he said, "We're here to retrieve food for them." There was a pause.
"This is Guardian," the robotic voice repeated, "What are you here for?"
"We're here to retrieve food for people starving up above!!!" Crono yelled. Another pause.
"If you do not reply, you will be fired upon," said Guardian.
"It can't hear you," said Marle.
"Must be broken," muttered Crono. Suddenly, there was a series of whirs and clicks, and several small doors opened up on Guardian. Small guns extended outward from them. Crono, Marle, and Lucca backed up against the wall.
"This is not good....." said Crono.
Crono and Marle (Chapter 6)
"Is something wrong?" asked Crono. Marle shook her head.
"It's not your fault Crono," she muttered, "I'm just not cut out for this stuff. How can I possibly fight Lavos when I couldn't even stand my ground against that thing?" Marle pointed at the dead creature. She put her hand to her forehead.
"I ran away Crono. I dropped my weapon and ran away. What good am I?" Crono didn't respond, so Marle continued,
"I used to think that this is what I wanted, Crono. Adventure away from the suffocating life of a princess. But when I stood there with that... that thing running at me, I realized that I could die this way. What would that do to my father, Crono? It would destroy him!" She looked up at Crono, who was cleaning the blood off his sword.
"Marle," he said, "Running was the only thing you could do. I would have run."
"No," argued Marle, "You would have charged at it and stabbed it with your sword. You would have been brave." Crono didn't answer, but when he thought about it, he realized that would be exactly what he would have done.
"I want to go home, Crono," said Marle.
Marle and King Guardia (Chapter 6)
The king's gaze once again fell upon Crono. Crono's hand tightened around the hilt of his sword.
"I see you are still with this felon," said the king.
"He's not a felon!" protested Marle, raising her voice, "I went with him willingly!" The king's face became red as his anger increased.
"You were gone for two days!!" the king yelled. Marle fought to control her anger. After being silent for a few seconds, she responded calmly.
"Something happened, father. It wasn't his fault, but I was..." she trailed off, not sure if she wanted to risk telling the half-truth she was about to tell.
"Yes?" asked the king, a hint of concern in his voice.
"I was kidnapped." Marle finished. The king's eyes widened in surprise.
"That's what I thought!" he said.
"No, Crono didn't kidnap me, he saved me!" Marle quickly told him. The king's look of slight concern quickly changed to anger again.
"We do not dignify him with a name at this castle, understood?" said the king through clenched teeth.
"You don't even dignify me with a name!!" yelled Marle suddenly.
"Your name is Nadia!" he reminded her.
"My mother named me Marle!!" she argued.
"You will be called a name fitting for a princess!!"
"Marle is fitting for a princess!!"
"Marle is fitting for a pauper!" Marle was in tears at this last statement.
"My name...." she said quietly, "Is all I have from my mother." The king's features softened as he heard this. There were several awkward moments of silence.
Ayla and Azala (Chapter 10)
Ayla was standing silently, her hair blowing in the wind. She wore a determined expression on her face, as if her entire life had been leading up to that moment. The door on the other side of the tower slowly opened. Azala, his face showing an equally determined expression as Ayla's, approached the group. He stopped about ten feet away.
"You have destroyed us. There are but a dozen of the once mighty Reptite race." Azala's clawed hand balled into a fist.
"It was our greed that got us in the end. Torching the village was not enough. We had to loot it as well." Azala looked Ayla directly in the eye.
"The fire ... our own fire ... is what was our downfall." Azala raised his fist into the air.
"But fire was invented by the apes!! Why were they the first to discover it?? Why were they the first to control it?? The fates have sided with them!!" If Crono hadn't known better, he might have thought that tears were forming in Azala's eyes. Azala quickly regained his composure.
"Let it be known," he said quietly, "That we Reptites were not cowards. Let it be known that we went down fighting." He pointed at Ayla.
"Let us settle this." he said, "Just you and me. One on one to the death. I must know who was meant to dominate."
"Azala...." said Ayla in a near-whisper.
"Step forward Ape!!" he suddenly yelled, "By the light of the new red star, I challenge you!!"
Schala and Queen Zeal (Chapter 11)
"You asked for me, mother?" asked Schala in a quiet, obedient voice. Her eyes were lowered to the floor, as was expected of her when talking to the queen in public.
"I require the use of your pendant, child." said the queen. At this, Schala's eyes shifted and met the queen's. Schala realized her mistake and quickly lowered her head. She grasped the pendant around her neck.
"What... what did you want with it?" she asked hesitantly. The queen, already embarrassed from Schala's earlier mistake, was further angered by this statement.
"Don't question me, young lady, I am merely using it to test the mammon machine's power." Schala took a step back.
"But..." she protested weakly, still looking deliberately at the floor, "We don't even know what the mammon machine does. It could destroy the pendant..." Now the queen was furious. She had not intended for the crowd to find out that she did not yet know what the mammon machine did. The queen began to chant a spell. Schala immediately recognized the spell as an offensive one. She was terrified. Her mother had never tried to hurt her with magic before. Being extremely gifted in magic herself, Schala did the only thing she could think of doing. She chanted a spell of her own. The queen finished her spell, and outstretched her hand. A ghostly silhouette of a skeletal arm flew toward Schala, with the intention of ripping the pendant from her neck. Schala finished her casting, and was surrounded by a protective, blue orb. The queen's ghostly hand came into contact with the orb. Her spell fizzled, and the hand disappeared. The orb faded away after a few seconds. The queen's hands clenched into fists. Her anger was now beyond control. The people in the room stood in a shocked silence. Schala was terrified. Nobody defies the queen. Especially not her daughter. The queen knew what she had to do. If word got out that someone had gotten away with openly defying her orders, the results could be disastrous. She had to make an example out of Schala.

Chrono Trigger
Poem created (and game played) by Mars the Infomage
Thanks to the creators of Chrono Trigger (SquareSoft) and the ZSNES emulator for making it possible. And I
don't care what the reviews say, Final Fantasy of the time is NOT better.
In the valley of the death
None had ever thought to dare
A beam of light has hit the ground
And a shining sword did bare
This sword had been the power pure
With speed of wind and hard as steel
But to achieve its fill of rule
It must be wielded by pure will
The Masamune, it was called
And it was the only way to fight
The evil that the land has faced
The Magus, heart as dark as night
A knight that sword has tried to get
Lord Cyrus was his proud name
But Hero's Medal was a must
To be a winner in this game...
Lord Cyrus had himself a friend
Apprentice swordsman, who was Glenn
He was as difficult to bend
As iron made at dawn of men
That he and Glenn had tried to find
But magic spells were in effect
The kid was shortly in a bind
And could no longer walk erect
The Magus had the feel of death
As magic struck Glenn into bog
He knew the spell to which came to pass
And has turned Glenn into a frog
To get his vengeance he forswore
To kill the fiend who killed his friend
But then he figured: there was more
And thought of how the wound to mend
For years he the answer sought
Until he came unto the shore
Where he awakened after that
Which he can never have forlorned
He realized that power had
As all things, reason and a cause
And suddenly, a legend came
To memory, of greatest curse
In ancient times, a star did fall
It hit the center of the world
It buried deep into the earth
And Lavos it was later called
It fed on life, and magic too
But after all it had a rule
Supporting those who aided it:
Corrupt, then use, then eat the fool
The Magus fell under that spell
But he was sure he could break free
He sought to waken Lavos then
So it could not attempt to flee
The fool succeeded, but then failed
For Lavos had a giant shell
And nothing Magus tried to do
Availed, for it reflected spells
Alas, the Magus was at fault
But it could never be undone
And only Crono and his pals
Could stand a chance... or fall as one...
