Kana The Great
A rustling of leaves broke the silence of the barren landscape known as the tundra. The black and white wolf slid out of hiding. It was so dark, yet there seemed to be a light. The wolf slid onto the plain. There was nothing but darkness, but then there was an explosion. It was fire. The wolf had seen it before, when man had brought it. Beside the fire he could see, faintly, the figures of twenty or more other wolves. Around the fire stood 5 large boulders. On the boulders stood 5 large and heavy built wolves. The wolf came close and was inching forward when suddenly, an enormous wolf, who was apparently the alpha, overthrew him. Another wolf came to his rescue. "Kulu, don't!," said the she-wolf, coming to guard him. "Get out of the way, Jessie!," thundered the alpha. "No, enough killing ! This has to stop!," she said, growling ,but not loudly. "Yes , get out of the way , Jessie, so I can finish him off," said a tan wolf, who was standing behind the alpha. Jessie turned to him and said, "Stay out of this, Brocen," and then she turned to the black and white wolf and said, "Run!" The wolf sped past her to the fireside. The pack scowled and charged him. He was surrounded, with nowhere to go but to the fire. He jumped. His paws did not burn, nor did his fur. In fact, a gray light seemed to be coming from the fire around him. The alpha got him out and said, "You're one of us so you can stay. Say, what's your name?" The wolf looked warily at Kulu, and then said, "Kana." "Sorry about that ," said the large black alpha, " But you're just in time for the ceremony." The wolves regrouped around the fire. Jessie invited him to come and sit with her. Brocen growled, but didn't attack. Kulu walked to a bed of straw, flowers ,and moss set upon a boulder, and sat. "I welcome you all to the annual festival of Lammas. I'm sure you've been waiting for this night, save the newcomer, this night of the waning moon, August first. We'll have the usual games, ice ball , the races, and the hunt, and also the match against the Water wolves of the Mystic Moon Pack. We of the Magiclaw Pack , with our skill and training, might win the Rite of Paws, which we have not held for 27 suns (which where they live is about 27 years.) So let's enjoy and let the festival begin!" Kana was told about everything, from ice ball to water wolves, which were a race of wolves quite different from this pack, consisting of types of fire wolves. "The Rite of Paws is a Ruby and a sapphire fused together, I dare say the ruby is bigger. It is worn around the neck on a chain of Emeralds, diamonds, pearls, moonstones, and amethysts. It belongs to the winner of the grand fight, which is a fight between the two teams," stated Jessie, reading from the Book of Rites. Kana said," I'll sign up," and he did. Then it was time for ice ball. There were two teams, which were the two different packs. Ice ball is exactly like a snow ball fight, with the exception that they count hits and misses, which make the teams army regiments. The water wolves were firing rapidly while the fire wolves hadn't fired at all. The water wolves were getting anxious when ..... Wham! A giant ice ball the size of a large hillside flew over the Magiclaw Pack and hit the other Pack. Half of them were out of the game. The ice balls were showering over the Magiclaw Pack, and they were getting clobbered. "Wolves! Tail position!," said Kulu. The wolves each put an ice ball on their tails. They aimed at the other pack. "And... FIRE!!" The wolves swapped their tails and they flew and hit the other pack. They were getting beat bad, and had to go to the last resort; invade. They rolled in the ice and snow, filling their fur to the rim. They stuffed ice into their mouths and balanced it on their tails. "Charge!," said Kulu. They all smiled, and pounced onto their hill. "Ready to give up, burn-outs!," said a blue wolf on the other team. They said nothing and ran. When they got close enough, they pricked their fur and swung their tails. To the Mystic Moon Pack, it was like an avalanche. The Magiclaw Pack had won. To the winners went Merlin's Talisman, an old wolf heirloom. The next game was the races. The rules were that each wolf that wanted to compete had to ,with a vine rope, pull down a pine tree and drag it across a frozen pond. Kana eagerly joined. So did Brocen. When they had the vines ready, Brocen came over to Kana's left side and said, "You stay away from Jessie. She's mine and no one else's." "She doesn't belong to any one, especially you," said Kana, as he turned away and, with a swish of his tail, slapped ice into Brocen's mouth. Kulu said ,"If all are ready, go!" Kana jumped at the lake. He put half of his strength into it, and then put all of it. He strained on the vine, and finally, Kana heard a crack. The pine tree toppled down and, to Kana's delight, most of the branches hit Brocen. Kana eased back a little and pulled harder than ever before. Nothing happened. He looked back. Brocen had a tight hold on the tree. Kana now saw a stone in front of him and he put it on his tail and threw it at Brocen. It hit him on the head and he fell back. Kana had no trouble getting it across the pond. His prize was a caged phoenix, 6 foxes trained to sled, and, to Kana's surprise, a kiss from Jessie. The last game, the big hunt, required two leaders and a team of animals and a sled, along with a hunting bird. Kana had all of them, and he eagerly joined. The rules stated that the hunter with the most kills in an hour's time would be the winner. Three other wolves, and Brocen , joined. They split into pairs, and before Brocen had claimed Jessie, she had moved to Kana's side. Then, the hunt began. Kana took his whip and they were off. Jessie spotted it first. A flock of Canadian geese were passing by. Instantly, the fire bird headed them off and came down with 6 of them. "This is great! How about a moose?," said Jessie. "Hey, Torch! How about getting us a moose?" yelled Kana to the phoenix. The phoenix nodded, and swooped down. Suddenly, a moose came running toward them , with a flaming tail. Kana hooked it with his whip and pulled it down. In the last five minutes, they had gotten about 20 animals. Kana stopped the sled and then howled. A small snowy owl came to sit on Jessie's shoulder. "She's yours, Jessie," said Kana. He headed back to the pack. "Know how many I caught, Kanoo? Eleven! Beat that, half-breed!," said Brocen. Jessie smiled and said, "Listen, Brook, we have cleared out the forest, just go look at our kills. Twenty!" They won and both got pendants bearing their names. Finally came the battle. They said the names of the animals in the order that they would play; "......Brocen, and last, Kana" The first few wolves lost the battles. Brocen's turn came and went, with him losing. "And now, in this corner, the last challenger, Kana!" Kana stepped in and circled. The other wolf was large and heavy, but Kana was even larger. Kana snapped at the wolf and grabbed its neck. He threw him across the tundra. The other wolf opened his mouth and water splotched Kana, knocking him off his feet. This wasn't fair!, Kana thought. Kana opened his mouth to bark, but no sound came. Kana opened his eyes. The other wolf had fallen over , and his fur was singed! Kana had won. He had actually won! And not only did he win the Rite of Paws, but also what others had bet him; a ruby collar, a leather harness, a silver fox, and, to his ultimate surprise, the love of Jessie. That night, he slept curled next to Jessie, who had ignored Brocen completely after his defeat. Kana thought for a long time before sleeping. He had won friendship, rank, and love all in one day! Morning came, and Jessie told Kana that they should build a den. Kulu said he wanted to have a chat with him, so Kana walked to Kulu ' s boulder. "You see, Kana, to be able to live here, you have to work and get paid. There are many jobs, from logging to farming, so we have a job for you; fox breeding. They are needed everywhere, and we have already made a pen for them. I heard you wanted a den, so we have had the wood put where you and my daughter, Jessie, slept. Here is a list of the side jobs you can do part time," and Kulu handed him a paper. "Your d-daughter?!?," exclaimed Kana. "Yes, and I see she has picked you, of all wolves, one of the best." "Thanks, sir, "Kana said, and he went back to the den. Jessie saw him and said, "Fox breeding! We're gonna be rich!" Kana took his post at the pen and looked at the foxes. There were both kits and grown foxes. A wolf wearing a green harness came up to him and said, "How much for 3 kits?" Kana didn't know the currency, so Jessie said, "1 ruby." Kana was given the ruby and he handed the foxes over. Over the day, Kana had earned 27 rubies, 3 emeralds, and 5 diamonds. He took a break and bought a deer, which was like a horse to a wolf. Kana strolled down the street. There were dens in hillsides, which were both stores and homes. Kana stopped by at a shop and looked around. He picked up a collar for his favorite fox, 6 harnesses for his foxes, and a paw brace for Jessie. Kana then saw a sign on the next den; Today! The Fairy Fair! Bring your livestock and your best trained foxes for the races! Buy fairies for low prices! Winners of the big race receive: First: Magi's brace and each of the fairies Second: a golden collar Third: 3 foxes To enter, be at Kulu's boulder at 2 O'clock. It was 1:45, so he got Jessie and his stock and they arrived at the boulder. "Let the fair begin!" Kana sold 47 foxes, and split the money with Jessie. Kana signed up for the race and then they lined up for it. Jessie started chants for Kana, and Kulu joined them. The race was 2 miles long. Kana poised and then… they were off! Kana had worn his favorite harness, and his fur was packed tight against it. He swung left on the wide turn that was required. He was, as usual, the first one to get back. Second came Brocen, and another red wolf. Magi's brace turned out to be a sort of bracelet that gave certain powers to its owner. He also discovered what the fairies were and what they looked like. The fire fairy, the water fairy, the air fairy, the earth fairy, the light fairy, and the dark fairy were all ruled by the fairy queen, who just happened to belong to Kana. Kana got 50 of each type, and Jessie put up a store called The Fairy Shop. Kana soon became the richest wolf that side of the Mackenzie.
Kidnapped!
One day , when Kana was walking, he heard someone talking, and, to his surprise, crying. He peeked at who it was while he remained hidden. It was Jessie. "It's all Kana's fault, you mustn't blame yourself, none of us would have kidnapped Kulu." Kana recognized the voice to be Brocen's. Wait a minute! Me!?! Kidnap Kulu!?!, Kana thought. "Yes, it might be,... it is! Kana did it! It's all his fault! As substitute leader, I am going to do this on my own!" said Jessie, puffing up and trying to look strong. She walked to the boulder. Kana came strolling up and sat in front of her and said, "Hey ,Jess, what's up?" Jessie looked angrier than ever, and Kana saw Brocen smile and look at Kana delightfully. "Don't you Jess me, Kana of the MYSTIC MOON PACK!!!!," she said. Gasps went up from the crowd. "But what have I done?," he asked. "Don't play dumb with me, Mr. I'm-the-best-so-I-should-have-the-best-girlfriend! Kulu's gone, and if you don't tell me where you've put him, I'll take drastic measures!" "But . . I . . d - don't kn. - know-" "Then I have no other choice," she said , and she let out a battle yell and jumped to him. She circled and waited. Kana said, "I don't want to fight you." Jessie lunged ,took his tail ,and bit hard. Kana let out a howl. Then , he ran. Away, away from the pack, the love he had known , and the things he had. Jessie threw his belongings at him and said, "Never, ever, come back!" She turned, kissed Brocen , and went to sit on the boulder. So that was it. The end of my life here. His things were carried on his sled and he drooped along. His first night was spent looking and howling at the moon. Suddenly, someone grabbed his tail. He looked back. "Syne! Naka! It's you!," said Kana in surprise, looking at his brother and sister. "Yep! What're you doin' here?," asked Syne, his blue fur shining. "I .. was thrown out of the Magiclaw Pack." "Well, come and join the Mystic Moon Pack, we'll treat you like a King! By the way, could you be king? Ours just died. Well, we sure don't want Jax to be king. Come on, we'll introduce you," said Naka, wagging her sea green tail. The three wolves ran to a river. "Yo, Tawny! We got Kana! He'll beat the tail off of old Jax!," said Naka. A tan and brown wolf rose from the water. "So this is the famous Kana. I can't believe you beat Jax at the battle. That's great! Everyone will want you as king." "Not as long as I'm still standing," said Jax, also surfacing. "Well, we'll see who's best in time," Tawny said , and she went back underwater. Naka and Syne jumped in and showed their tricks to Kana. So did Tawny and Jax. Kana took a deep breath and jumped. His pains washed away. He felt the water swirl around him. He dove to the very bottom and saw something. It shown like a star. It was a blue rose. When Kana felt the rose, it was as hard as a rock. He surfaced and gave it to Tawny. Jax said, "Let's see how you can do in the water. Go under." Kana did, but almost instantly, Jax caught him and held him underwater. He couldn't breath. His lungs held at first, but then they started to cave in. Right then, Kana blacked out.

Kana was on land. He coughed and spat on the ground. His paw hurt, so he tried to lick it. His tongue was scratched badly. Kana ran to the water and looked at his reflection. What he saw almost choked him. His head, once fiery, now had a fin! His ears were fins, his feet had them too! Kana gasped and sat down. Why was he like this? Changed, from fire to water? "Surprised you , didn't it?," said Tawny from behind. "You have the mark of the Magi." "Where?," asked Kana. "You should notice, just look at your tail!" He looked back. His tail was over 20 feet long! "So?," said Jax," He's no better than me!" "Wanna bet? ," asked Kana, and he poised himself in a pouncing position and whirled his tail like a cobra ready to strike. "Let's race , Kana," said Jax slyly. They stood at a tree and then took off. Jax kicked Kana while he was running and Kana pushed Jax back with his tail. At the last curve, there was a cliff. They circled and both slipped. Kana grabbed a tree , but Jax shot off. Kana swung his tail down the slope and caught Jax. When Kana pulled him up, Jax said in almost a whisper," Thanks, pal."

In the next few weeks, Kana learned how to lead the water wolves. He worked alongside his pack, unlike other kings that were too lazy. He sold faeries and gave them as prizes. He now became the richest wolf on the Mackenzie. One day long after that, Kana was out with his hunting group , called King's Riders. "Kana, I hear voices. I smell .......... fire wolves!," said Naka. They sneaked behind some bushes. "You know what? That Kana is never going to see your daughter again! We ran him off! Now I'm the Magiclaw king, and you won't ever be again, Kulu!" The voice was Brocen's. He was holding Kulu captive! After Brocen left, Kana came out to Kulu and said," This has gone too far. I lost your daughter and my old life, but now I'll get it back!" Kulu gasped for air and said," They think it was you! Brocen's gonna pay for this." "First we'll get the rest of the Mystic Moon pack. I'm their king." They rested for a while and started the long journey. Kulu was told the story about how this all happened. Kana had let the pack members use his sleds and he ran. One night, Kana heard voices. He woke the others and they followed him. Humans were nearby and they had built a fire. Kana signaled to run, and they ran. Straight through the fire. Kana came out as a fireball. The flames blew off of him and he looked larger. His fins were now gone. He had wings, not only wings, but silver wings! His fur had changed from black to red, blue, green, orange, and yellow. He flew into the air and said, "We're here." They went into their territory. "Stay behind, Kulu." They found Brocen on his boulder, and Jessie pampering him. Kana rose first out of the mist. "Kana! Welcome back! Now prepare to die!," said Brocen. The water wolves arose and pounced. They took on the fire wolves. "You can never beat me. I was destined for glory and this is my moment," said Brocen , "And in my kingdom , I rule all!" Jessie joined Brocen, and they both beat and scraped him. "Kana! We're coming!," said Jax, and the water wolves all rose again. "We can beat you!," said Brocen. "Yeah! We -," Jessie said, but she stopped when - what do you know - Kulu showed up. "Kulu?," said Jessie. "Kulu! What're you doing here?, "asked Brocen. "Daddy, get Kana out of here! He's turned to the water wolves!," said Jessie. Kulu breathed in hard and let out a deafening howl. A fire ball hurled at Brocen and Jessie. "Are you blind? Brocen kidnapped me and you threw Kana out. He came and led the water wolves. He and his friends saved me from Brocen! And I see you standing beside Brocen, believing him and obeying him! Who could've thought that my own daughter would do such nonsense?" "But Daddy, I-," Jessie tried to say , but Kulu cut her off. "Now , to settle this. Kana, I step down as king, and crown you. Next, the water wolves join our pack. Brocen will work for Kana. As for Jessie, .. well, you know what to do." Kana pounced on Brocen Kana sat on the boulder and felt something tighten around his paw. It was Magi's brace. It now glowed a deep red. The brace engulfed his paw in a fireball. Tawny put water on it, and it revealed a paw covered in a type of metal. He looked at it and pointed it at the ground. Sparks shot off of the paw and there appeared a ring of magic. "It's the Magiclaw! Kana's Magi's son!," said Tawny. "Kulu, is it true?," asked Kana. "Yes," Kulu sighed, "Our pack is named for him. I knew him. He was a great wolf." "I have his power? This changes everything! I can do anything now! I owe it all to you, Kulu. I'll build you something. Come on, wolves, we're gonna build Kulu a monument!," said Kana, and they rushed to an ice mound. With their paws, they made a majestic figure of Kulu. "Now, I need a place to live, not a den, but like humans have. What is that thing,... a cabin?," said Kana, "Yes, we'll build a whole town!" In the next week, Kana guided his pack through building. The wolves used harnesses to pull down the trees. "Yeah, Jax, put that one on the top! Tawny, don't let that one fall! Kulu, pull down the large one by the lake! Jessie, pull hard! Naka, grab that limb before it falls! Syne, watch for the one falling! Brocen, get me some coffee!" Kana worked alongside them. Before long, everyone had a cabin. Kana had once lived with a human, so he knew what they had. Kana had moss put for beds. Other things that were needed were supplied. Things soon got back in usual order, most usual things, that is.
